DID YOU KNOW? There are over 40,000 CSRS/FERS annuitants in the state of South Carolina with about 18,000 retirees and approximately 8,500 Current Federal Employees (CFEs) living within the area that Chapter 87 serves. We currently have 540 members on our chapter role, so all the rest of those annuitants and all those current federal employees are prospective members. We as NARFE members are all public relations agents and recruiters. Please continue to pass the word to those potential members about what NARFE is doing for all of us and how their membership will help in protecting our earned retirement benefits. Please contact me with any ideas you have about making NARFE known to these prospects - and to the public.

We all know the importance of the National Active & Retired Federal Employees Association. We've read in the pages of this periodical as well as Retirement Life and other publications about the things NARFE is doing to encourage our elected representatives in Congress to initiate, sponsor, and support legislation to protect our retirement benefits. And, of course, the good things being done in the areas of Alzheimer's, disaster relief, scholarships and others.

The size of NARFE directly affects the strength of our efforts and is very significant in accomplishing our goals. Nationally, we are just over 350,000 strong, a figure that for various reasons has gone down over the past several years. In South Carolina, we have about 3800 members. Membership of our Columbia Chapter 87 is 540. Within the Columbia chapter area are thirty one additional National members who are not members of the chapter. This makes us the largest chapter in the state, and we are one of the most active.

The number of people attending our monthly meetings has been running about 40 to 50 which, considering irregular attendance due to sickness, travel, vacation, etc. involves about 100-110 active, participating members.

These are the demographics of what our chapter has to work with to do the things we do and to fill the positions of 12 elected officers and 19 appointed committee chairs. Some of the officers also occupy committee chairs as provided in the constitution. All these positions and their occupants are listed each quarter in this newsletter.

It is not always easy to find people who want to assume leadership roles in organizations, but a viable chapter must have
